The Saint Regis Mohawks are a federally recognized Indian tribe and historic members of the Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois) Confederacy.  The Confederacy is comprised of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora Nations.  Tobacco has long been an essential commodity in Haudenosaunee life.  The earliest recorded account of Haudenosaunee tobacco usage comes from Champlain in the year 1603 and the archeological record from smoking pipes dates tobacco use back as far as 1500 B.C.  Tobacco was used by the Haudenosaunee in conducting religious ceremonies, maintaining diplomatic relations…
